Why We Did That: Drapery For The Win

Interior Designer

Through millwork and masonry, furnishings and finishes, lighting and leaps of faith, MakeNest Interiors transforms spaces with thoughtful decisions based on core design principles. In our ‘Why We Did That’ series, we take you behind our recommendations.

“I don’t think I want drapes,” my client said at the first house call. “Isn’t it dated?”

After twenty-five years in my profession, I know my designer toolbox very well. So when our client said that she was unhappy with how colorless her great room was and that she felt boxed in by upholstery choices made before contacting me, I made the case that a highly effective method of introducing color without starting from scratch was the one thing she said she had doubts about: drapery.

In fact, drapery is one of those design elements that never goes out of style. Fabrics, trimmings, hardware and other details of them change with time, but the benefits of these custom window treatments are myriad. In this project, they married the neutrals in the existing furniture with crisp shades of green and blue. They also enhanced the scale of the room, softened the acoustics and added warmth and personality.

The goal was to keep the palette light and fresh and introduce color with exacting impact. In choosing a different media cabinet, we opened up the wall and modernized the aesthetic. New accent tables, rug, and lighting further pulled the threads together. Wallpaper behind floating shelves added an engaging, small-scale graphic and Ben Moore’s Carrington Beige gave the room a soft, golden glow.
